Summer is the Best Time for Children’s Braces

When kids daydream all year about summer vacation, they’re thinking beaches, barbecues, movies and of course, no homework! Even if they daydream about a movie-star smile to match their trendy new shades, the last thing they’re thinking about is braces. Surprisingly enough, summer is actually the best time for kids and teens to start orthodontic treatments. Here are a few reasons why:

Flexible schedule for appointments for children’s braces

Although your child might not complain, frequent absences in school for orthodontic appointments can affect student success. Add in the complications of scheduling appointments around extracurricular activities and your own work schedule and you’ve got a needlessly stressful situation. Orthodontic treatments will still continue into the school year even if you start during the summer, but it’s important to start the process on a positive note.

Adjustment period for discomfort with braces

We won’t sugarcoat this: getting braces for the first time isn’t fun. The hardware is uncomfortable and often requires an adjustment period. It’s much easier to deal with an achy mouth while watching a movie on the couch than in a classroom trying to decipher calculus or deconstruct Dickens.

Time to develop new routines for kids with braces

Hectic school mornings are not the best time to learn and practice specialized techniques for cleaning teeth with braces, which often involves new equipment such as interdental brushes and slim-bristle toothbrushes. It’s also not a great time to figure out which foods your child can and cannot eat with braces. Soft foods tend to be best, especially after soreness from the initial appointment and subsequent tightenings, and you’ll need time for trial and error if your child is a picky eater.
