Do you avoid getting the dental care you need and deserve because you feel fearful or anxious? Have you missed your dental appointments, avoided scheduling important dental treatment like fillings or crowns, or suffered through agonizing tooth pain because the mere thought of sitting in a dental chair makes you nervous?
It is common for many patients to feel nervous or anxious about their dental procedures. With sedation dentistry you can be calm, comfortable or even asleep through the entire procedure! Jose David Sanchez D.D.S. has advanced training to help with your anxiety, by administering medications to make you feel more comfortable.
Sedation dentistry is used to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for certain people receiving dental treatment. It enables individuals too afraid to go to the dentist to receive the dental care they need while avoiding the common apprehension known as dental phobia. According to to the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS Education), a professional dental organization dedicated to ensuring that patients receive safe, comfortable and anxiety-free dental care, 30 percent of the population avoids the dentist due to fear. This all-too-common “dental phobia” prevents people from receiving necessary routine dental care, potentially compromising the health and functionality of their mouth and smile.
The anxiety that some people have can be controlled by administering sedative drugs. These medications can provide relaxation, amnesia, additional pain control and deep sleep for patients. Depending on the person and the procedure, an anaesthetic plan is prescribed that is tailored specifically to meet your needs. At Sedation and Implant Dentistry of Tehachapi, we are proud to be one of very few dental offices in Kern County offering IV sedation and anesthesia.
IV sedation is the administration of anesthetic medications intravenously. The procedure puts you in a comfortable, conscious (semi-awake) state of reduced anxiety. You, the patient will have little or no memory of the dental procedure that was performed. Through conscious sedation, you are placed in an amnesic state from the medications used to administer sedation. During IV sedation, you are able to respond to verbal commands and sometimes to a light physical touch.
Because you will be administered sedative medications, you will not be able to drive. You will need to have transportation to and from your appointment.
During sedation, you will be closely and continuously monitored by Dr. Sanchez and his staff members, using electronic equipment that shows blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels and your heart function on an EKG monitor. After the procedure, you will be released to go home, when Dr. Sanchez feels that it is safe to leave. You and your designated driver will receive post-treatment and home care instructions.
Don’t put off the important dental care you need because of a dental phobia. Whether you need extensive restorative dentistry or just a simple routine check-up or teeth-whitening treatment, Jose David Sanchez, D.D.S. and his friendly staff will explain the various options and help you decide what’s best for your individual needs.
Once you’ve experienced the benefits of sedation dentistry, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to make the appointment. Sedation will help relieve the stress of your dental procedures.
