Are You Being Honest about Your Flossing Habits?

Studies have shown that despite constant reminders about the importance of regular flossing, a large number of us are failing to do it. What is even more surprising is that over 25% of us actually lie to our dentist about our flossing habits.

A 2014 study by the British Dental Health Foundation further examined attitudes about flossing. Shockingly, one out of every three people admitted that they had never flossed their teeth. Further, about 14% of respondents claimed that the thought of cleaning the toilet sounded more enjoyable than flossing their teeth every day.

The Importance of Flossing
The findings from these studies have potentially troubling implications. It is clear that while most of us are aware of the importance of flossing, many people simply aren’t doing it the way that they should. To correct this problem, more widespread education is needed, and it is crucial that health officials are clear about the benefits that regular flossing can have.

Flossing between the teeth is a crucial part of any good oral hygiene routine, as removing plaque can help to prevent periodontal disease. Gum disease has been linked to more widespread health conditions like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

The good news is that it is never too late to start flossing and to reverse the negative effects of gum disease. However, the first step is being honest with your dentist and yourself about your dental hygiene routine. Your dentist or hygienist can provide advice on how to use dental floss or interdental brushes properly in order rot achieve the best possible results, so it is important to report your oral hygiene habits appropriately.
