Caring for Your Dental Implants

December 20, 2023 0

Natural-looking dental implants are a revolutionary way to restore the gaps in your smile caused by tooth loss. They’re custom-made to match your natural teeth and blend in with your smile. To ensure the longevity of your dental implants, it’s necessary to keep them clean and free from bacteria and plaque, which can cause infection in the tissues around the implant and lead to dental implant failure.

The major difference when caring for your implants is that it’s crucial to select gentle hygiene products. That’s because harsh or abrasive cleaning materials can scratch your implants and irritate the soft tissue that supports them. With that in mind, Dr. Sanchez has put together these recommendations for safe and effective dental implant care.

Use Gentle Hygiene Products

One of the greatest advantages of dental implants is how easy they are to maintain. You take care of your implants the same way you care for your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. You’ll also want to rinse daily with antibacterial mouthwash to help fight against infection.

Choosing the Best Toothbrush and Toothpaste

There’s been a lot of research conducted on the ideal toothbrush to use with dental implants, and the major conclusion is that a toothbrush with soft or extra soft bristles is best for protecting your implants. Either a manual or an electric toothbrush can be effective when used correctly. The most important habits are to brush for at least two minutes and to clean all the available surfaces of your teeth every time you brush.

There are several types of toothpaste that contain abrasive ingredients that can damage your implants and irritate the soft tissue around them. That’s why you’ll want to avoid all types of whitening toothpaste, toothpaste for smokers, and toothpaste that contains the following ingredients: stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, and baking soda.

Choosing the Best Mouthwash and Interdental Cleaner

Antibacterial mouthwash helps prevent dental infections such as tooth decay and gum disease. But mouthwash that contains whitening ingredients is harmful to your implants and your smile. You’ll also want to avoid mouthwash that contains alcohol because this will cause dry mouth, a condition that inhibits your body’s natural ability to protect itself.

An interdental cleaner such as dental floss removes plaque and debris from in between your teeth. When you buy floss, make sure to choose a brand that’s nylon-coated because it’s gentler on your gums and it slides between your teeth more easily. Many of our patients with implants find interdental brushes to be a convenient alternative to flossing. It’s important to select an interdental brush that’s either plastic or plastic-coated because metal brushes can damage your implants.
